Every year Archon organizes the Archon Day. During this day, we want to bring students, researchers, and professional archaeologists from the commercial sector together to talk about current topics in archaeology. This year the Archon Day will be held online on 30 October 2020 and the central topic will be: ‘Advancing access to Research’.

Workshops:

Three workshops will be organised which will be repeated three times, so students will be able to follow all of them.

1. Virtual Networking

Moderator: Caroline Jeffra

Panel members: Alex Fitzpatrick, Michael Rivera

With physical meetings all but impossible, it has become more and more important to keep in touch with colleagues around the world through digital means. Alternatives to traditional conferences are already happening, making access to research networks easier and more inclusive. In this workshop we want to discuss the opportunities and challenges involved.

2. Open Science

Moderator: Esther Plomp

Panel members: Hella Hollander, Ben Marwick

The call for Open Access to scientific research results is becoming stronger and stronger, certainly now that travelling is much restricted. But realizing Open Science involves more than just removing paywall barriers to scientific literature. Providing Open Access might also clash with all kinds of legal and ethical concerns, such as privacy and security. How far has archaeology already moved in this respect, and where does it run into limitations?

3. Alternatives to Physical Access

Moderator: Canan Çakirlar

Panel members: Gerrit Dusseldorp, Fokke Gerritsen

With borders closed and possibilities for organizing excavations strongly reduced, researchers are faced with a situation where physical access to fieldwork sites, museum collections and even experts is much more challenging. How can we make sure that this does not severely compromise research plans and outcomes?

Poster session:

Also this year we invite students to present their research through a poster presentation! The prize for the best poster presentation will be a personal research subsidy for publication costs/open access costs/translation costs up to max. 400 euro’s.

Since printed posters will not be an option this time, we ask you to prepare an online presentation:

Prepare your online presentation using Prezi (www.prezi.com), or convert it to Prezi from Powerpoint. Make sure that your presentation is divided in two parts: an introduction to your poster with max. 2 minutes of spoken text (2-3 slides), and the poster itself with more details on your research. You can create this second part like a normal poster, but use Prezi’s dynamic presentation tools to zoom in and out of topics – so make sure that you have a logical order of presentation.

Share the link to your Prezi with us BEFORE 26 OCTOBER, so participants to the Archon Day will have the opportunity to view it in advance. During the ‘poster session’, you will be in a break-out room, where people can enter to engage in discussions about your poster.
