ARCHON Masterclass: Science Communication POSTPONED

ARCHON Masterclass: Science Communication

Date: POSTPONED

Location: tba

Credits: 1 ECT

This year ARCHON will organize a day with various masterclasses on the topic of ”Science Communication’ in which you will be trained to write and present scientific findings for a popular audience. Afterwards, you will be challenged to create a vlog of your topic. In that way, you will be able to put into practice what you have learnt during the masterclasses by presenting for a broader audience.

Objectives:

1. To acquire skills to present your research for a broader non-academic audience.

2. To show to a broader audience what type of research archaeology students are currently engaged in. See it as a ‘look behind the scenes’.

Preliminary Program:

10.00-10.45 –  Session 1: Workshop on science communication by Maikel Kuijpers.

10.45-11.00 – Coffee/tea break

11.00-12.15 – Continuation of session 1

12.15-13.00 – Lunch break

13.00 – 14.45 – Session 2: Masterclass: ‘Scientific writing for a popular audience’ by Jolanda Bos of ‘BLKVLD publishers‘.

14.45-15.00 – Coffee/tea break

15.00-16.45 – Session 3: Masterclass on how to present online to a popular audience by Sigrid van Roode.

Session 1:

Can I do science-communication?

All of us should be able to communicate their research, if only for the sake of diverse research committees or the press. There are different ways in which you can open up your research to a larger audience. I will show a few examples, from a boardgame to documentary. We will go in-depth on writing. Writing for large audiences is a whole new ballgame. Using my experience of writing for de Correspondent and The Conversation I exemplify some crucial differences with academic text. You will use your own research to explore the relevance, interesting trivia, exceptional finding, or any other route through which people would want to learn about your work, and practice putting this down in short, jargon free texts.

Session 2:

During the workshop we are going to focus on getting academic research out of its ivory tower and making it accessible to a wider audience. In this workshop participants learn how to communicate academic knowledge toward society. That’s not only helpful if you’re writing a research proposal, but also when you apply for funding or in other application processes, or merely for the sake of self-advertisement as an expert.

Session 3:

Speaking for a general public may seem rather straightforward: however, it is anything but. In this workshop we’ll go over why that is, you’ll outline your own presentation and you’ll get practical suggestions and tips (including 7 ways to start your talk and what not to do with your hands). After this workshop, presenting to a general public will still not be straightforward, but you’ll have plenty of inspiration to make it work!

Credits: ARCHON members can receive 1 ECT for active participation during the masterclasses and present for a popular audience.
