Publishing for early career researchers – 16 February 2023
Publishing Tips for Early Career Researchers
Date: 16 February 2023
Location: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, New University Building (NU), room 02A-59
Though publishing your work is very appealing, it can seem a daunting process. Where to start? How to approach this? Do I publish part of my work now or all of it later? And what are the implications for me of open access publications instead of traditional publishing?
This workshop on publishing and publication strategies is aimed at RMA and (starting) PhD students and attempts to address some of these issues.
Preliminary Program:
09.30-10.15 – Session 1: Academic publishing guidelines by Dr. Philip Verhagen
10.15-10.30 – Coffee/tea break
10.30-11.30 – Session 2: Mini-workshop Mini-workshop ‘writing and publishing your thesis’ by Dr. Sasja van der Vaart-Verschoof
11.30-12.15 – Session 3: Graduate publishing view from the Editorial Board
12.15-13.15 – Lunch break
13.15-16.15 – Workshop ‘Effective English’ by Adam Frick
(14:45-15:00 – Coffee/tea break)
While the number of ways one’s English can be “improved” is infinite, often there are relatively basic, fundamental writing decisions made at the sentence level that make writing (and reading) unnecessarily complicated. “Effective English” workshops use writing samples from you, the workshop participants, to focus on sentence-level grammar decisions all writers can make which can improve clarity, precision, and coherence. The end result is a writing style that is direct, simple, and (ideally) more effective.
16:15-16:30 – Wrap up
Assignment beforehand: Send Adam (adam.effective.english@gmail.com) a short sample (300-500 words) of your “best” writing. The text can be from a work in progress, a completed dissertation, or even something already published. Deadline is the 9th of February.
Assignment afterwards: Improve your text to show what you have learnt during the workshop and send it to secretary@archonline.nl.
Credits: ARCHON members can earn 1 EC for handing in both assignments and active participation during the event.
