Developments in Mortuary Archaeology – 20 January 2022

This one-day meeting aims to focus on both the innovations and the problems that researchers face within the field of mortuary archaeology. Our invited keynote speakers will highlight new and innovative research in various aspects of mortuary archaeology while we would like to invite Archon members (ReMA, PhD, post-docs, staff) to present papers that problematize their research by demonstrating issues faced in their work and inherent in the discipline (from the material and data being studied to theoretical and interpretive problems), with the goal of discussing solutions for those problems, and sharing experiences. This will connect researchers working on a range of temporally and geographically disparate case studies in putting the focus on problems faced in the interpretation of the mortuary data. These problems might be sample sizes, accessing appropriate material or sites, the condition or preservation of material, working with legacy material with differential contextual data or archival records, theoretical problems, or interpretive issues. These talks will present the problems faced and either potential solutions, attempted or achieved solutions, or invite ideas on solutions, tapping into the mortuary hive mind.

We hope this meeting can be an opportunity to bring together all those working in Mortuary Studies across the Netherlands for open and inclusive discussions, where we can present the problems we face, seek solutions, share experiences, and plan future meetings.

Call for papers:

Please send a title and abstract (max. 300 words) to a.c.moles@rug.nl by 20th December if you would like to present your research. Presentations should last no more than 15 minutes.

Credits: ARCHON members can receive 1 ECT for attending the workshop and preparing a short presentation on their research OR write a report following the workshop (highlighting how the workshop addressed the key developments and problems being faced by mortuary archaeology)
