Data Management for Archaeologists

Data Management for Archaeologists, part 1

Credits: 1 EC
Date: You can do the course online at your own pace.

About the course:

During this course,  you will learn the principles of database design, management, and analysis for archaeological data sets.

Program ‘working with databases’ (Jitte Waagen):

  • principles of database design
  • project data management
  • data analysis (querying, data mining)

IMPORTANT – software:

MS Access is proprietary software, part of the MS Office suite; cheap licenses can be obtained for Dutch students and university staff through Surfspot.
MS Access is not available for Mac; in order to use it on a Mac, you’ll have to set up a dual boot with Windows or use virtualisation software such as VirtualBox. Alternatively, you could work with LibreOffice, but this has limited functionality and a different interface.

The course can be found here on Youtube. The title is Relational Databases in MS Access. The course was developed for ARCHON by Jitte Waagen. The course consists of 4 videos.

We give students the possibility to follow the first part of this workshop (tutorial ‘Working with databases’) online. Anyone can take the course, but we can only award EC credits to ARCHON members.

To get the credits you need to take the database course from home and hand in a reflection report in which you discuss what you have learned in every module and send it to secretary@archonline.nl. Include screenshots of your work. Also, include how you would like to or could use databases in your own research.
