PhD Skills Course ‘R and Statistics for Archaeologists’
Date: 19 February – 5 March 2025
Location: Van Steenis building, Einsteinweg 2, 2333 CC Leiden
Credits: 1 EC
This course equips archaeologists with fundamental statistical concepts and practical skills in R programming, focusing on data analysis and effective communication of results. Participants will learn essential statistical techniques, including descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, and basic regression analysis, specifically tailored to archaeological research. Emphasis will be placed on using R for data visualization and modification, as well as on communicating findings through Quarto, a powerful tool for creating dynamic reports and outputting them to multiple formats (DOCX, PDF, HTML, and more). Through hands-on exercises and real-world case studies, students will gain the confidence to analyze their archaeological datasets and present their results. The training covers the basics of both R and statistics, so no prior experience with either topic is required, making this course accessible to all archaeologists interested in enhancing their quantitative analysis skills.
Note: this course is geared towards students at the PhD level.
