2 EC for participation, a reflection report + PhD proposal for the mock interview (3 students).
31 January 2020, ARCHON is organizing a workshop for (R)MA students: How to become a PhD student. This day will be organized with the aim to offer (R)MA students information about what you can expect from a PhD position and how to get one. Topics such as different kinds of PhD-positions, how to apply for PhD-positions and how to write an application will be discussed. We will also discuss what you can expect from a PhD-position and what’s necessary to make it. The workshop will be given by Prof. Jan Paul Crielaard and dr. Philip Verhagen.
Program: 11:00 – 17:15 (drinks afterwards)
11:00 – 11:15 Welcome and explanation of the program
11:15 – 11:45 ‘So you want to become a PhD student?’
11:45 – 12:15 Exercise: why should you become a PhD student?
12:15 – 13:00 General information about PhD programs
13:00-13:45 Lunch break – Lunch is not provided, but can be purchased at the cafeteria of the VU. You can, of course, also bring your own food.
13:45- 14:15 Route 1: getting a PhD by applying to a vacancy (what should be on your resume?)
14:15 – 14:45 Route 2: getting a PhD by writing your own proposal (focus on PhDs in the Humanities program: what should you keep in mind while writing for an NWO-committee?)
14:45-15:45 Experiences from different PhD students
15:45 – 16:00 Coffee & tea break
16:00-17:00: Exercise: mock interviews with feedback (3 students get interviewed, and the other students prepare questions in advance).
17:00- 17:15: Discussion
17:15 Drinks
Registration: Register by filling out the registration form below. There is a limited number of places in this workshop. So, make sure you register on time and please avoid canceling last minute. Due to the limited number of spots, Archon members have priority. MA students can be put on a waiting list.
