Publishing for Early Career Researchers – 10 March 2025

Publishing for Early Career Researchers

Date: Monday 10 March 2025

Location: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, room HG 14A-36, De Boelelaan 1105, 1081 HV Amsterdam

Though publishing your work is very appealing, it can seem a daunting process. Where to start? How to approach this? Do I publish part of my work now or all of it later? And what are the implications for me of open access publications instead of traditional publishing?

This workshop on publishing and publication strategies is aimed at RMA and (starting) PhD students and attempts to address some of these issues.

Preliminary Program:

10.00-10.45 – Academic publishing guidelines by Dr. Philip Verhagen

10:45-11:00 – Coffee break

11:00-11:45 – Graduate journal presentations

11:45 – 12:45 – Mini-workshop ‘writing and publishing your thesis’ by Dr. Sasja van der Vaart-Verschoof

12:45 – 13:30 – Lunch break

13:30-16:00 – Workshop ‘Effective English’ by Adam Frick

While the number of ways one’s English can be “improved” is infinite, often there are relatively basic, fundamental writing decisions made at the sentence level that make writing (and reading) unnecessarily complicated. “Effective English” workshops use writing samples from you, the workshop participants, to focus on sentence-level grammar decisions all writers can make which can improve clarity, precision, and coherence. The end result is a writing style that is direct, simple, and (ideally) more effective.

Assignment beforehand: Send Adam Frick (a.j.frick@vu.nl) a short abstract (300-500 words) for a potential journal paper.  This text can be derived from a work in progress, a completed dissertation, or even something already published. Deadline is 3 March.

Assignment afterwards: Improve your text to show what you have learnt during the workshop and send it to secretary@archonline.nl.

Credits: ARCHON members can earn 1 EC for handing in both assignments and active participation during the event.

Registration (until 3 March):
